Controversy of Coconut Oil in Dentistry

ADA Recommended Oral Hygiene Practices

They recommend a regular oral hygiene regimen that includes flossing between the teeth at least once daily and a minimum of twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. These practices help to prevent cavities and to keep the gums healthy as well. For individuals with gingivitis, the ADA recommends adding an ADA-accepted mouth rinse to reduce plaque and reduce gingivitis symptoms. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance such as many Listerine varieties that include four essential oils in lesser amounts that help with oral care and fresh breath. This seal of approval is given to products that have been evaluated closely by dental experts.

Concerns with Oil Pulling

The idea of oil pulling is an ancient remedy that was practiced in southern Asia and India for centuries. The process uses a variety of oils, including sunflower, coconut, olive and sesame. The pulling of the oil through the teeth was said to improve some health problems. However, many current reports have concluded that while may in some instances the oil may provide a benefit, it isn’t anything more significant than that of preventative dental care and a regular oral hygiene routine with ADA-approved products.

Also, many articles haven’t even suggested any adverse health effects, which is concerning to medical professionals across the board. As dental professionals, we agree that the best way to remove plaque is chemically (with products such as Listerine) or mechanical with tooth-scraping at a professional dental office.
