Which Toothbrush Is Better? Electric or Manual?

by on 26 January

There are times when children want to do a perfect job of brushing their teeth, which causes them to brush too hard on the gum tissue. This can cause gum recession and abrasion in the long run.

The electric toothbrush is less dependent on correct brushing technique, which will do all the work for your children without harming their gums and teeth. Ultrasonic brushes such as the Sonicare and Oral B pulsonic eliminate the "scrubbing" motion so many patients use the get their teeth feeling clean. Plus, an electric toothbrush could be considered a fun way to brush teeth. There are plenty of designs and colors suited to children, making brushing teeth enjoyable instead of tedious.

If their brushing technique is flawless...

The manual toothbrush will do just fine. If your children are following good oral hygiene and sees our Board Certified Pediatric Dentist regularly, there is no need to switch to an electric toothbrush. A manual toothbrush can effectively get rid of the plaque in their smiles as long they maintain a proper brushing technique. What's the proper brushing technique? Have your children avoid the back-and-forth motion when brushing. Have them aim the toothbrush bristles at the gum line and move the brush in a circular, gentle motion. This will sweep the plaque away from the gums, promoting supreme oral health. If you have questions or your child need a demonstration on proper brushing technique don't hesitate to ask us!
