Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment
SDF eliminates the need for restorative dentistry in order to repair the look or function of the teeth. It has been effective at preventing further tooth decay too. Some dental restorations that are done in lieu of SDF treatment include: root canals, dental fillings or crowns. It is made of two components – silver and fluoride. The silver acts as an anti-microbial, which strengthens the protective layer of the teeth known as the dentin. Fluoride is the active ingredient that stops the tooth decay and helps to prevent further decay from occurring.
During the child’s dental visit, one of our dental team members will brush and rinse their teeth without paste to prepare for this treatment. The teeth are then dried and any debris such as plaque is removed (a mini dental cleaning). Next, the SDF is applied to the affected teeth and the solution is allowed to cure for about two minutes. Once the tooth or teeth have been treated, we advise parents do not let the child to eat or drink for at least an hour.

There are many situations in which SDF treatment is recommended. They include and are not limited to:
- Children with excessive decay (and can’t have it treated altogether)
