Fluoride varnish applications can be done anywhere from two to four times annually. The number of treatments will depend on how likely it is that your child may get a cavity.
About Fluoride Varnish Treatment
Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that helps to slow down, stop it from worsening or prevent tooth decay altogether. It is made of fluoride, which helps to strengthen tooth enamel. Remember that these fluoride varnish treatments cannot completely prevent cavities. They are most effective however in those who have been brushing and flossing regularly, getting regular dental care and eating a healthy diet.
Fluoride varnish is safe and is used all over the world to prevent tooth decay in children. Only a small amount is used and it quickly is applied and hardened. This varnish is painted on the top and the sides of each tooth. It is sticky, but will harden once it comes in contact with saliva. The child may be able to feel the material, but won’t be able to lick it off. It does not hurt to have the varnish applied. Once it hardens, it is brushed off anywhere from 4 to 12 hours later.
After Treatment
The child can eat and drink right after the varnish is applied, but only eat or drink soft foods or cold or warm liquids only. Also, do not brush or floss the teeth for at least six hours after the treatment.
Regular dental visits, a healthy diet and a routine oral hygiene regimen will help prevent tooth decay in your child’s teeth. To learn more about fluoride varnish treatments and to schedule an appointment at Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry, call our offices in Goodyear and Surprise at 623-535-7873.
